Aminophylline
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment of bronchial asthma, bronchitis, bronchospasm & status asthmaticus. Relieve periodic apnea. Adjunct in treatment of pulmonary edema & paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea caused by left heart failure.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 5-6 mg/kg over 20-30 min. Max: 25 mg/min. By slow IV inj only.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Severe hypoxemia, HTN, hyperthyroidism, liver disease, history of peptic ulcer, patients who have taken theophylline prep w/in previous 48 hr, smokers, cardiac failure, underlying seizure disorders. Neonates. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, GI hemorrhage, visual disorders, insomnia, headache, anxiety, confusion, restlessness, hyperventilation, vertigo & palpitations, ventricular arrhythmias.
Drug Interactions
Lithium, cardiac glycosides, sympathomimetic drugs, cimetidine, allopurinol, OC, rifampicin, phenytoin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, propranolol.
